This exhibition is an ongoing project that aims to exhibit online the work of contemporary artists across the globe to analyse the topic of Corona and the crisis caused by the disease on the global scale. Since Gallery visits are a problem Hinter den Fassaden (Behind the Facades) occasionally offers the virtual view into the public and private art spaces where access is otherwise impossible. Allowing to analyse art in certain contexts and given settings. All artists are welcome to participate, irrespective of age and country of origin. All kinds of formats are welcome. With this project ARE/artistic research and curator Lily Fürstenow would like to support and explore the creative potential of arts in the times of crisis. Please write us on FB or per e-mail:   liliartresearch@yahoo.com

The immediacy of pictorial image in Richard Rutner's water-colours and oils contains form and movement. Subtle colour contrasts almost pursue musical analogues to abstraction. In his recent series of Suites and Octets the reality of vision is delivered in the abstraction of painting. The contrast of forms, light and colour, figure and ground makes up the structure of his paintings. Colour here carries diverse aspects of painting through form and movement creating poetic pictorial realities. Light bronwish to red, yellow, green and blues prevail reminiscent of human silouettes, fragmented objects or networks.

Almost Real Things. Magazine. Issue 18. 2020

----------------------------

Down to the Core

In our times when superficiality is omnipresent having an adverse  effect on contemporary artistic practice reaching out deeper into the core of things is a happy alternative. Core as the essential deeper substance underlying universal phenomena as well as artistic production is always worth taking a closer look especially in the times of crisis like pandemic, war and political instability. In her work Artist Heikedine Günther treats the concept of core as her major subject. What is the core of color, the essence of vision and how does core relate to the cosmic light and darkness? The paintings by Günther consist of multiple layers of color pigment applied one upon the other whereas the golden color serves as the very basis. This is responsible for the mysterious luminosity that shimmers through to the very surface and all along the contours of the oval elongated forms dominating the composition.

The floating shapes work directly on the soul without destraction of subject matter or content. The paintings convey a unique equilibrium of color planes that evoke Goethe’s farbenlehre and offer a contemporary interpretation of the centuries-old tradition of rendering of color and light in painting.

Heikedine Günther's paintings invite us to think of various stages of sublimation from physical to spiritual states that could be represented by geometric forms. The duality of figure and ground adds extra luminous vibrations to the picture surfaces. The non-perspective conception of space and anti-materialist idea of form characteristic for her work appeals directly to the mind of the spectator due to formal simplicity, subtle variations of color tones that results in a certain rhythm. The core paintings bring to mind celestial motion of the planets caused by cosmic energies that are translated into ranges of intense color applied onto canvas. The shimmering colours accentuate the Greenbergian “optical  illusion”  of painting and the flatness of its support. One’s eyesight is fascinated by the play of luminosity produced by the optical space created by the artist's hand.

A letter from the artist

How does it feel to have 10 heads? Would our impressions of life be any different than they already are? It may amuse you to know that I am in a unique position to answer that! Yes, 10 heads is possible and yes it alters your perception of the world. Often enough, I have tried to climb into people’s heads. It’s then that you realize that the most common face you look through across the street has something most uncommon about it. And boy, is there a better joy than your brush transferring those moments across the canvas?
To me, that’s life in its purest form.
When I graduated out of JJ School of Arts as a bright-eyed lad, with 4 gold medals to take on the world, little did I know that the world is a much wider canvas than advertising. One learns everywhere and like they say, there are no good experiences and bad experiences; there are just experiences. When you realize that, you are at peace with yourself. Expression then is natural, uncluttered almost divine. The most natural form of expression then came to be brush on walls. Unadulterated joy has no guidelines; no limits; except those imposed by mansion owners who insist on leaving their walls intact when I change dwellings. And thus, with trepidation and reluctance, my brush graduated into canvas.

Like every other person who has held a brush, I seek to express a world beyond the confines of the physical canvas. What you see here is not defined by right and wrong. On my canvas, pain and pleasure are not opposite ends of the spectrum. They coexist. In fact, one doesn’t exist without the other.
I hope you see that and celebrate it. Like I do.

- Chaos.

ANSTRENGUNG WIDERWILLE BOYKOTT: GEISTER.

Heute. Wir lesen nicht nach. Keiner kontrolliert uns. FCK THE SYSTEM. Das ist jetzt wichtiger. Und plötzlich bin ich heiter und stolz.

Mittendrin will M. schummeln.

Was innen liegt, liegt verborgen.

Was soll das, eigentlich? Was liegt hinter allem? Sichtbarem.

MARTINA SINGER

Ausstellungsansichten. Tutzingen. Juli 2020

Martina Singer. Performative Photography. Recent Work

Text. Dr. Phil. Lily Fürstenow-Khositashvili

Martina Singer’s recent photographs are carefully staged performative self-portraits that analyze womanhood. One is confronted with the meticulously constructed images of a female posing for the camera within metaphorical environments. It is the artist’s subjecthood that is in question here. To what extent is one affected by surroundings, by constantly changing physical condition and by one's artistic practice?

The recurrence of the motive of frames in the artist's recent works stresses the idea of presenting oneself in the artistic context e. g. of being framed and being exposed toward external gaze. Unlike conventional female portraits that would concentrate on glossiness, idolizing eternal youth, fitness, and body glorifying the contemporary fads for healthcare and sports Martina‘s portraits communicate quite the contrary: eccentric body language verging on disruption, ill-fitting outfits, incongruities unexpected poses and gestures that provoke the viewer. Our perceptions of female beauty, taste and elegance are profoundly questioned together with the traditional assumptions about ageing.

The artist's obsessive play with costumes, fabrics, clothing versus nudity comes up as a gesture of parody of ever-changing fashion trends as well as of exploiting female nudity in all sorts of advertisement campaigns as well as in arts. Her performative strategy would critically draw upon the aspects of the construction of female identity and empowerment. The ambiguity of her images points to hidden desires, drives and fantasies that speak to the viewer leaving one puzzled and uncertain. In the gesture of camouflage and self-effacement, beneath havy make-up, eccentric costumes, artificial framings and ambiguous environments omnipresent in Martina Singer's recent photo-series one thing becomes evident - these photographs testify that there is no such thing as integrity. Accept it or not – forms evolve, one is subject to constant change, ambivalent transformations, identity splits - all of which is a dynamic process in the formation of a self, where art serves as  mirror conveying emotional states and breaking the conventional taboos.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Jim Martin

Jim Martin(www.martinart.org, @martin_art_6) is an abstract artist working in mixed media who lives in Omaha, Nebraska in the United States. A social scientist with a PhD in political science from Florida State University and a professor of the social sciences at Creighton University, Martin created art from an early age, at one time winning high school artist of the year for the state of Nebraska. However, he drifted away from artistic pursuits only to return to these later in life. “Several difficult life losses led me to use art as a means of self-care. I later realized that I was processing those experiences through my work”, Martin says.

Martin’s art comes from a much different place than his professional work; a reflection on the events, emotions, and spaces of life. “I’d say that my best work has come from an almost unconscious, meditational place; only later do I recognize the inspiration for any one particular piece”. Martin’s work often reflects naturalistic, organic themes, but can also be very detailed and technique-driven, a facet of his work that he has explored during the isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Martin has shown work at several local venues in Nebraska, including the Apollon gallery, The Hot Shops, and the Malibu gallery as well as Kaneko’s Tesselation Project. He has also shown in many collaborative evemts with the Nasty Art Collective, a group of artists concerned about democracy, the rights of immigrants, and the treatment of LGBTQIA individuals.

* 1990 in Bad Nauheim, Hessen

lebt und arbeitet in Leipzig

My artistic method is closely linked to personal experiences and the examination of my observations of the present. Experiences and feelings in the private sphere can often be traced back to social and political mechanisms that have a direct impact on individuals.
Embedded in a late capitalist, post-digital society, questions arise about the interaction between, for example, emotional goods and interpersonal relationships, between digital and analog realities, social optimization tendencies and political power relations and their effects on people. With the help of precise observation and reflection of one's own world of experience, as well as wide-ranging, partly theoretical research, these mechanisms can be understood step by step and transferred into artistic formats. The choice of media is always dependent on the specific issues at hand and ranges from performance and installation to text, photography, video or readymades.

Artist Statement

Since my studies, I have been working with abstract geometric shapes. Influenced by Kasimir Malevich or Wassily Kandinsky, they are the starting point of my non-representational paintings and wall paintings. As an artist in post-socialist and reunited Berlin, since my earliest works, I have tried to find my own style, which asserts itself against the realistic art prevalent in Berlin, both in East and West Berlin, and occupy a place in the emerging Techno-scene. The special climate after the Wall fall, between political waste land and a new avant-garde, influences my art, which I continue to develop on the basic elements triangle, square and circle. My paintings are pulsating constellations, which flood the canvases as well as exhibition rooms and thus make the white surfaces a playground for geometric turbulence.

Andrea Mikyska

Andrea Mikyska graduated from the Supermedia Studio at the University of Art and Design in Prague and during her studies, she completed an internship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and an internship at the Universität Berlin der Künste in Berlin. Her work draws on the immensity of data content on the Internet and her own experience of presence in the online space. The work of Andrea Mikyska often touches on those issues of the popular visual culture associated with their own identity and self-reflection in relation to fashion trends. Her videos and installations are playing with the young generation, the ubiquitous tension of the constant intersections between these "public" and the intimate spaces of individuals.

I look at the practice of art as an integral part that needs to be shared and communicated. My work is united by the symbolism and aesthetics of the 1990s in which I was born and began to introduce new media. As a video artist, I seek to answer questions about the ecology of human identity – questions such as: how do objects in our lives affect our daily ritual; how does change in a place influence our experience of it; and what do our relationships with other people, organisms, computer systems, and current technology affect our lives. My work is mainly focused on digital narrative dialectic as the subtext of different life-processes: landscapes, environment, situations, organisms, programs, or places as an emergent fabric of events, simultaneously woven together amidst constant change. I believe at Anthropocene concept is the way in which it universalizes the roots of the eco-crisis by situating it among the anthropos-humanity in general, when it is, in fact, the result of a specific set of actions taken by a specific set of individuals, which is to say unbridled global capitalism and its agents and beneficiaries, especially as connected to the exploitation of the environment in all its forms in search of ever-increasing profit. Celebrating speed and technology has its risks. A century ago, the writers and artists of the Italian futurist movement fell in love with the machines of the industrial era and their apparent ability to invigorate society. Many futurists followed this fascination into war-mongering and fascism. While some futurist works are still admired, the movement’s reputation has never recovered. It is an important legacy for us that you are going to convert into a digitized form and leave data and heritage for the next generation. I believe in the Apocalypse. I do not play musical instruments, but I like to dance. My favorite color is blue in all shades. I strive to make my projects scalable and desirable.

I’m convinced that there is nothing more important, timely, and urgent to consider as our present ecological crisis, and in this regard, we can only do so by starting from our bases in our respective fields. Under current forms of governance, our relation to the environment threatens our coming existence, where not only nature is colonized but also our very future, colonization that we must all struggle to resist. I would like to move more comprehensively towards artistic practice. Using multiple media at once and looking for a homogeneous whole in art. My topics are mostly about ecological dystopia and about future scenarios where a man plays them in relation to nature and living organisms, which cause a greater role in the formation of Pyrocene (T.J.Demos, The Agency of Fire: Burning Aesthetics). The most compelling current artistic models, in my view, join the aesthetic dimension of experimental and perceptual engagement with the commitment to postcolonial ethico - political praxis and do so with sustained attention to how local activities interact with global formations. Working within and against the thick, heterogeneous histories of conceptualist art, the complex intertwining of aesthetics and politics within documentary moving-image practices, and the socio-spatial politics of environmental sculpture of decades past, contemporary artist is connecting to and building upon past approaches of institutional critique, documentary fictions, and multi-species assemblages. Mostly, I am inspired by the process itself.

Jahrhunderts wirken.

Cardboard Drawings (at home, Dorset UK)
I sometimes draw on cardboard boxes to help me to draft my paintings before putting them onto canvas, in this case using cardboard packaging used for protecting canvases. The use of non-traditional materials references the Arte Poveramovement by making art without expensive materials. The raw aesthetic quality exposes the intuitive process of my work.
Peculiar realms solo exhibition Devonport Guildhall Cells, Plymouth 2019
This exhibition installed in Devonport Guildhall Cells (formerly a prison) explores the myth of hysteria and archaic therapies from a personal perspective. It gave me the opportunity to reflect on some of the ideas that occurred to me through my career as an art therapist and as a parent artist balancing art and family life.
Stuck at Home installations using the home as a backdrop, Dorset 2020
The home provides a container keeping the inner world apart from the outer space, and the walls within the home create further boundaries within that frame. Not many people get to see inside. During the lockdown I have been homeschooling my children so my studio has been overflowing into different rooms around the house as I supervise their work. Whatever approach one takes to balancing art-making and parenting, it is important to continue to be creative.
Nut Shell Miniatures installation in the doll’s house, Dorset 2020
I paint portraits on the back of small metal printmaking plates. I had been reading a lot of crime fiction and this led me to discover the Nutshell studies of Unexplained Death. These are dollhouse-style dioramas used by Frances Glessner Lee, an early forensic scientist, which inspired this installation.
Animated Drawings Levitation screened in Altered Images with the London Group at St John’s Crypt, London 2018
In my animated drawings I take a simple movement from its beginning to its end and then record it backwards to create a loop. It is a magical process for me to see my 2D work come to life through animation. It makes the impossible seem possible and plays with time and memory. The animated drawings which I do involve a process of dissolving and reaffirming the image as I follow its transition to a resolution. The sound tracks often involve my children and noises I collect around the house.

Notes on Individual works
Changing screenThis episode of confinement has led me to think about confined spaces (such as a changing cubicle) and I have begun a series of images on this theme, aiming to capture something about the private moments in such spaces. Oil on canvas screen 152x81cm and charcoal, gesso and collage on cardboard screen 152x210cm.
The stairs: Sleepwalker This painting illustrates the feeling of somnolence which has crept over me during lockdown, acrylic on canvas 152x102cm
The Office: PsychologistThis is a portrait of a psychologist surrounded by his family relations test kit in his office, acrylic on canvas 122x152cm
The Kitchen: It Rained in the kitchenand Time for CoffeeThese pictures illustrate the quiet moments of collapse behind the kitchen wall before presenting dinner, acrylic on canvas 152x122cm and oil on metal 21x14cm.
The park: School Leavers During lockdown we had an improvised picnic in the park to provide a kind of closure for the children who were transcending to secondary school so that they could say gooddbye to their friends, monoprint 21x14cm.
The Living room: Levitated developed out of a body of work exploring the balancing act between art making and parenting and the many hoops that a parent has to go through, solar etching 21x29cm
Head AboveSelf-portrait trying to keep a positive outlook in times of crisis, monoprint 30x21cm.
Flour AngelUsing flour and a shadow puppet I made this animation with a view to project it in a site specific space like a mill or in the snow. It is accompanied with Koto music composed to match the simple movements of the puppet with the intention of creating a feeling of peace and reflection. Stop motion animation 2 minutes loop.
