Maud Tutsche. Linoldruck, Letraset auf Bucheinband. 19x11.5 cm. 2020
Our feature on Art against Corona today is Maud Tutsche, participating in a group exhibition Cold Turkey organised by Glue by Dag www.glueberlin.com. In Maud’s newest work, colour and dry transfer letters are applied to thin fabric of used book covers. The transparent, woven linen creates a gauzy surface. The veiled transparency of the wearer and the colour layers are interrupted by scratches and markings. The overlapping rectangular forms are occasionally crossed by lines, strokes and scratches that contribute to the effect of ephemeral spontaneity. organises in Berlin. The exhibition continues the set of art events regularly organised in Berlin by Glue by Dag - also represented on Art against Corona Online

TATIANA SOPHIA SAINZ. Artist Statement
The first years as a child in Mexico have burned themselves into my sensual memory. They have always shaped my relationship to light, color and haptics in my paintings. The strong colors of Mexico omnipresent on house walls, clothes, Mexican markets as well as the variety of the landscape or the fascinating turquoise of the Caribbean have decisively influenced my perception. The sensuality of these experiences makes me search for a specific glow of the colors in my paintings that correspond to this feeling of splendour.
Due to the intensive preoccupation with dance, the process of creating my paintings is always permeated by the dynamics of music, movement and a permanent change of perspective. Finding structure and enduring the chaos I experience as a human and artistic challenge.
However, the breaks in my biography and the violent tremors connected with them shaped me to the same extent as the brightness of the sensorial wealth and the inherent darkness of Mexico. My work is always testimony to this search for belonging. The strength that is rooted in life itself and has shown to be unshakable to me breaks through in the artistic process. I see myself as a catalyst that helps this force to visualize itself and to become present in color, shape and structure.

Mathias Roloff is currently participating in a Corona Intra Views exhibition at the Galerie Feinart Berlin. Fruit and humans represented in a colourful palette against harmonic landscapes make an impression of idyll and romantic mood. Mathias Roloff reinterprets the rich tradition of European naturmort painting with its typical motives of lemons and grapes in his signature style offering a different vision of well known motives. His dreamy figures float or crouch against reddish-yellow landscape backgrounds within the dreamy worlds of their own undisturbed by disasters of reality.

In this current body of work Una d’Aragona engages in a dialogue with classical painting, its history and meaning in order to explore contemporary concerns and narratives.
D’Aragona utilises the psychoanalytical technique of ‘free association’ in both visual and textual language to play with multiple meanings. Rubens’ painting The Abduction of Europais reinterpreted as a meditation on our ‘abducted’ relationship with Europe and our treatment of animals. The Rubens original is itself a reworking of a version of the myth by Titian, which portrays the rape of Europa by Zeus in the guise of a white bull. Just as Rubens contemporises the classical myth by referencing the establishment of Europe as a trading region, d’Aragona similarly updates the tale with symbols of meat-eating, the Americanization of culture, and intensive farming.
‘The Trees of the Mind’ references a Sylvia Plath poem and incorporates elements of the poem and of Plath’s life in a uniquely personal interpretation. D’Aragona uses collage to bring together disparate elements of visual language and reference which she then paints in oil on canvas. A Cezanne still life with oranges refers to a frequently noted food in Plath’s journal, the blue light of the mind as in the poem and the black trees, offer an insight into a particular experience of Plath’s experience; abstract and figurative elements combine to offer a visual record and textural memory. D’Aragona uses her experience as a Psychotherapist in an attempt to map the mind, the psyche and its mental, emotional, opposing and fractured contents.
She has exhibited widely and has been a selected artist in numerous open competitions such as National Open Art, Zeitgeist Art Projects, Wells Contemporary Art and Bath Art Prize, and prizewinner for southwest in National Open Art.

TIMO KONTTINEN
These works are all part of Tmo Konttinen's main project 365.
"Late in March 2013 I started the art project 365. The rules I drafted for the project are:
1. Make at least one new artwork every day.
2.No censorship, every image has to be published.
3.When the piece is done, publish it to Social Media(Homepage,Instagram and Facebook).
4. Do not repeat the same image.
5. Each piece is and artwork in itself, although it is also part of the greater artwork 365.

5. Each piece is and artwork in itself, although it is also part of the greater artwork 365.
All my works are numbered at my account in instagram...many works doesnt even have other tittle than number for ex 2554/365...so actually tittle number is more important than other tittle(which i also have added to many of my works).

Matthew Byrom. Biography
Matthew Byrom
I am a multimedia artist currently working with ceramic and porcelain tile, I like to describe the artwork I make as, ‘a series of good and sometimes bad decisions’. Mosaic is a simple depiction of this idea, each tessera a choice in shape, colour and location.
I grew up at the seaside on the south coast of England, and spent the proportion of my childhood on the beach, quite often alone, mostly making sandcastles. In school I opted to study art, music, drama and writing, this was the ovulation of my creative spirit. At university I studied creative writing where I was quickly labelled ‘the ringleader of trouble.’ and was promptly kicked out, however this came at the perfect time as I was presented an opportunity to move to the USA, and after a tempestuous year of love and loneliness I was adopted into a strange artists commune named ‘The Golden Cat’ in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It was here surrounded by artists, musicians and eccentrics that I developed a real understanding and appreciation of Art in all its forms.

HILTON EDWARDS. Artist Statement and Biography
“ Art is not merely talent, but an inherent quality of every individual and thus unique to each person. This dormant artistic expression is awakened when one explores the practice of art.”
Hilton’s unique style of art is distinctively modern and abstract. His paintings explore the realms of consciousness and its relationship to matter and spirit. This inspiration is expressed by portraying these ideas onto canvas, by use of play on texture, colour and finishes.
He is a self-taught artist and employs a variety of mediums including cements, natural dyes, acrylics and burlap (hessian cloth), exploring the earthly elements of colour and substance. His layered applications of different mediums onto textured surfaces explores space and the illusions it creates.
Hilton has established and owned art galleries over the past decade. As an art consultant, he has curated numerous solo and group exhibitions both locally and abroad. At present he is concentrating on his own career as a fulltime professional artist.

Vince Straub. Artist Biography
Vince J. Straub is based at the Oxford Internet Institute, his conceptual and minimal works explore ideas through the lens of both software and hardware. Employing a variety of mediums, from photography to computer programming, his practice seeks to both capture the fleeting beauty of life as well as render the absurd reality of being thrown into a digitally-mediated state of existence. Although most of his works have their beginnings in serendipity or contemplation, many originate as a result of conversations with other people— be that artistic collaborators, impractical academics, or his mother (the artist Claudia Sacher).
He was previously a member of the Tate Collectives and Blikopeners art collectives, and has taken part in group exhibitions in London and Amsterdam.

Franziska Stevick catches the gentle dynamics between evolution and definition. Her
|
often surreal depictions of transformations in movement and meaning are forever
|
alleviating.
Born into Berlin’s urban creed of grey skylines and enthralling nightlife, she has an affinity for nature and a great love for the outdoors. Frequenting the outer limits of Brandenburg under the stars or not; Franziska brings much of that connection to her sought tranquillity towards the natural ebb and flow of things, into her works. Franziska Stevick has over the years been a part of many intimate collections - be that performative, exhibitions, commissions or print. Alone or in collaborative projects alike her work spans many varied techniques with a sure focus on collage. Not limited to this however, Franziska has explored paint, shop installations and lithography (gravure). Franziska has continued her exploration of painting, drawing, installation and lithography and has found paper, in the form of collage, to be a satisfying and inspiring media. Often using discarded magazines and newspapers, her reform of the structure and the characteristic uniformed grid used in printed media combined with her drawings perfectly exemplify the noted comfort in nature’s ebb and flow. Franziska’s most notable projects include; collages / drawings of characters, untitled, newspaper on paper. “Paper is like painting in another way, I like the history it carries with it, the information repurposed for our time”

Artist Statement
"Part of its appeal lay all too clearly in the fact that this was
an environment built, not for man, but for man’ s absence."
[JG Ballard, High-Rise]
My works generally deal with themes of vanishing and transience – the Vanitas motive applied to art and the medium itself. Photography always serves as a starting point in my artistic process, but through experimentation, different media are always a possible endpoint. Abstraction tends to play an important role – an uncanny distance between Viewer and Work is a prerequisite.
While my work employs different media, and sometimes very different styles, my approach, methodology and inspirations are generally similar.
In my urban nightscapes, architectural spaces are explored that were designed to make man disappear into a repetitive anonymous blob in a generic city maze. The dark spaces border on a play between aestheticism and nihilism, and the often fragile printing materials might reveal which one might prevail in the end.
My more metaphotographic works also deal with concepts of disappearing.Objets trouvés, security camera footage, and other types of photographic experiments are all employed to point to the medium’s limitations of preserving a memory or a moment in time, and to highlight its complete incapability to represent reality.
Lastly, my multimedia works focus on repetition, a stream of consciousness intended to reflect my personal questioning of my art.

Emile Quanjel
Emile Quanjel (1961)
As an artist auto didact, working on his own visual language: a ritual dance between mystic and ratio.
Educated as an architect and applied design researcher, with an ongoing carrier in both fields.
The idea and the Act is starting point and must start on the spot – the paper, the space.
There is no alternative, there is no picture in advance, no image to copy, only the idea and the Act that gets started. The contrarian materials are the tool that the given reflect: ' the human who moves forward and around wanders into the eternal light, eternal colors. '
It comes to capture the ritual in which the ritual should be through over and over again and develops. It is given as a future reminder; the images are sometimes explicitly as if they may exist but usually suggest the images. The suggested images in which human emerges and disappears in the eternal light, eternal colors.
‘I draw outside the colors’

Joshua Goode. Biography
Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1981, Joshua Goode is researching and developing mythic historical misinterpretations and manipulations in an effort to expose the malleability of our past, present and future. His alternate history and mythology preserve memories of childhood ranch life in Texas by reimagining objects and imagery from his youth as iconic ancient artifacts. Having studied history and worked as an archaeologist on many actual excavations, he conducts staged excavations around the world, working with the community as a performance. The constructed artifacts of his invented civilization mix fact and fiction to appropriate and distort the history and myths of each region he engages. His ‘artifacts’ have been exhibited in solo exhibitions in international venues such as the Razliv Museum, St. Petersburg, (Russia); Capellades Museum, Barcelona, (Spain); Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, (China); Darb 1718 in Cairo, (Egypt); LaSala Gallery, Zaragoza, (Spain); Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic, Zagreb, (Croatia); Borey Gallery, St. Petersburg, (Russia), the Monchskirchein Museum, Salzwedel, (Germany), James Freeman Gallery, London, (England), Maxim Boxer Gallery, Moscow, (Russia) and is represented by Ivy Brown Gallery, New York, (USA) and RO2 Art, Dallas, (USA).
Goode received his MFA from Boston University and has participated in residencies in Russia, Germany, Finland, Spain and was a researcher on an archaeological dig for the University of Tubingen at Vogelherd Cave in Germany. He received the Dozier Award from the Dallas Museum of Art and is currently the Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas.

ARTIST STATEMENT
As an artist, I am fascinated by the aesthetic of imperfect bodies and flesh as it is. I like to explore how a body works and what it consists of by the visual language of painting. I do admire how evolution has created these ideal machines. However I am not so concerned about the flesh itself, but related issues like immortality, the vulnerability of the flesh, cloning of human organs, sexual and gender relationships, as well as the relationship between body and mind.
In the recent series, I have been inspired by the works of Jane Saville and Lucian Freud, Alexander Deineka, as well as Renaissance artists.
I always admired the old masters, and I like using their strictly phased system to create my large canvases.
In my work, I strictly follow the technique of the old masters. I make a compositional sketch for each work, then a drawing, then a grisaille in a brown-white tone, and only then, if necessary, I apply a layer of colour. This very laborious technique creates the effect of naturalness of the flesh. Also, it makes possible to enlarge fragmentation and the creation of large-size paintings.
Art for me is a necessary condition for existence, on the one hand, protection from external conditions, on the other hand, it is the facility with which I explore life.

Semra Sevin - Biography
Semra Sevin is a German photo, film -and installation artist working on the subjects of diversity and identity. Sem- ra was strongly influenced by the universalistic humanist worldview of her family in learning to see the world from various perspectives, particularly in accepting that truth and reality are subjective interpretations and that diverse humans have equal value in society
Sevin’s complex and distinctly orchestrated arrangements offer up far more references to a “real life” than a pure- ly photo-documentary style would. Sevin’s works lay within the tradition of experimental photography and art (Man Ray, Robert Rauschenberg, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Hans Breder, among others) intertwining elements of abstrac- tion and figuration while also incorporating the ideal of post-contemporary art.

Test install (blue studio)
Peter A. Leigh with his Dazzle Camouflage mock-up spacial installations analyzes the essencial questions of frames, framing, modes of enframed spaces and art display / exhibition practices. Being framed - Dazzle Camouflage - making up appearances to fake up success. Incredibly in the zeitgeist with contemporary art world crisis with all shows from the current Art Basel Viewing Rooms to this one here on Arts against Corona taking to online modes meaning to dazzle - camouflaging the crisis. An empty frame is still a frame.
The images are all digital alliterations of physical pieces, re-imagined as installations, colours and materials apart but coexisting in the same space.

Biography
Uwe Michael Neumann (b. 1961) developed love of photography when he got his first camera, a Polaroid, at the age of eight years old. From 1982 to 1988, Neumann diverted from photography studying law at Cologne State University. But his love of photography, driven by curiosity and the desire to see new things and discover and show their beauty, always called him back.
He conducted his first photo tour in Provence, France in 1992.
In 1998 he visited New York where he further developed his photographic style; experimenting with verticals and keystone/perspectives.
Launching into the field of international cooperation he combined his daily work with his photography in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Finland, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Sweden and Ukraine.
After his life-changing visit to Cameroon in 2014 Neumann returned there in February 2015 taking photographs of Central Africa’s unique nature and everyday life, which differed greatly from Europe, and even tourist destinations in Africa like Kenya and the Republic of South Africa. During his stay in Central Africa, he lived in Yaoundé, Cameroon and travelled frequently to Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic, Gabon, Chad and Congo Brazzaville, among the poorest countries in the world. There he worked and became friends with Berlin-based photographer and film producer Jacob Steiger. Steiger shared knowledge about camera technique and post-production.
He also visited and photographed Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Benin, Kenya, Egypt and the Republic of South Africa.
Seeing many different countries challenged his views and propelled him to capture the pure reality of each new place in his photos. Neumann focused on often-overlooked treasures in nature, andbeauty in places seemingly dominated by poverty.
In October 2017 Neumann returned to Berlin and worked on over 90,000 photos from Africa, launching his first exhibition in May 2018 in‘Animus Kunstgalerie’ near Berlin. In October 2018 he had an exhibiton at Gallery GH 36, Berlin, curated by Dr. Lily Fürstenow. In 2019 exhibitions at Physiotherapie Nils Hanke and Biologische Zahnmedizin & Implantatologie Dr. Sendler followed.

Tim Waltinger. Artist Statement
Tim Waltinger (1976, Regensburg, Germany) makes paintings, drawings, mixed media collages and assemblages, new media art and sculptures. By implementing a dramatic and often metaphorical terminology, Waltinger intents to deepen the astonishment of the viewer. His compositions leave traces by balancing on the edge of recognition and estrangement. In his at times surreal but always intense pictures, fiction and reality meet, well-known allegories merge, meanings shift and past and present fuse. Moment and thought play a crucial role. By using a visual terminology that approaches disparate and contrasting social and political matters, he consolidates ostensibly incompatible concepts into a renewed and different universe. His precise attitude analyzes the blurred border between experience and imagination. His engaging research regarding the fusion between language and image establishes a thorough involvement with the spectator, both in emotional as well as intellectual terms. Tim Waltinger lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Artist Statement
Starting point concerning my work is the sensory perception.
Daily astonishment and things I experience around inspire me, if not 'force' me to report small and bigger occurrences. Normally while I walk I observe, collect materials, objects and sounds, draw, translate and play with their meanings The results are concrete or more associative images, photo′s (polaroid’s) or concepts for monumental work. Sind’s the Corona measures : being in-and outside my neighborhood all works like to be more concentrated.. so I let this be
Paintings arise in a process of work from the environment. Colours are either exuberant or subtle and paint is applied in (transparent) layers. They come into being in a continuous process of change and growth. Explorations in time, landscape, nature, environment, culture, light and space.
Disciplines: drawings, paintings, mixed media and monumental work. Ruth van de Pol 2020
